This post is leg 2 of Claire and my 4 part cross-country road trip. To read about the first leg of our trip, be sure to check out Sabbatical Part 1 – Florida to Wisconsin.
Claire and I woke up in Madison, Wisconsin, packed out bags and hit the road. For Claire and I, this was the beginning of our adventure into the unknown. So far, we’d visited friends and family in places we’d been to before and even lived in. From Wisconsin west, we were exploring the unknown.
Our first stop westward was at Effigy Mounds. It was an unanticipated stop actually. I wish we’d built in a bit more time to stay longer. We did a short hike of maybe 1-2 miles, checked out the gift shop, then hopped back in the car to continue our journey West. Along the way, we also stopped to see the Jolly Green Giant, a roadside attraction of a giant fiberglass man in green. The final stop, and the highlight of the day was arriving in Badlands after a full day of driving. We arrived in time to setup our tent just before sunset.
It felt surreal camping in Badlands. The land on it’s surface is very flat with canyons carved down into the land over time.
